Television has an unfortunate habit of pulling the plug on shows when producers are hoping for another season, leaving a trail of unresolved cliffhangers. Magnum PI already faced this when producers and the cast were confident about a fifth season in 2022, only for CBS to suddenly cancel it.

NBC stepped in to renew the show for a fifth season, split into two parts.

Meanwhile, Magnum and Higgins were forced to work for the sinister businessman Bedrosian, who blackmailed them with a tape of the couple committing a crime while solving another case.

The duo had to overcome obstacles and keep Gordon at bay before uncovering a scandal that forced Hawaii's governor to resign. Despite that, they couldn't catch Bedrosian, who still had the tape.

It turned out the ring actually belonged to Rick, who was planning to propose to his girlfriend Suzy.

The final scene showed Magnum and Higgins talking, with Higgins saying she might be open to marriage someday. That seemed like an acceptable way to end the series, but could a standalone movie be a better send-off?
